投資銀行の具体的業務は、顧客企業に対して上述の通り有価証券の発行による資本市場からの資金調達、M&Aについての助言を行なう他、財務に関る部分では各種保有資産の流動化による資金調達（不動産やローン債権の証券化など）、金利や為替等の金融派生商品を用いた財務リスクヘッジがあり、極めて多岐に渡る。「投資銀行業務」とは呼べないものの投資銀行が手がけるビジネスとしては、顧客あるいは自己勘定のための有価証券や金融派生商品のトレーディング業務が挙げられる。
